Tallahassee (Fla.) Memorial HealthCare is treating the victims of an April 17 shooting on Florida State University’s campus that left at least two people dead and six injured, including the alleged shooter.
A gunman opened fire on the college campus at 11:50 a.m. EDT. Campus police responded immediately and engaged with the shooter, FSU Chief of Police Jason Trumbower said during an April 17 news briefing. Deputies shot and apprehended the 20-year-old suspect after he failed to comply with orders. The suspect has been identified as the son of a longtime Leon County sheriff’s deputy who had access to one of her weapons, according to Sheriff Walter McNeil of Leon County.
Tallahassee police confirmed that FSU’s campus was secure around 3 p.m. EDT on April 17.
“Multiple law enforcement agencies remain on site for the ongoing investigation,” the Tallahassee Police Department said in an April 17 post on X.
Five individuals were transported and admitted to the hospital with gunshot wounds. The suspect was also taken to the hospital with unspecified injuries. Two other victims, who were not students, were killed in the shooting, authorities said.
In an April 17 statement on its Facebook page, Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare said it received six patients related to the incident, all of whom are in fair condition.
“We are deeply saddened by the tragic events that occurred today at FSU. Our hearts are with the students, families, and everyone impacted by this heartbreaking situation,” the health system said. “Our dedicated trauma teams are providing the highest level of care to all patients, and we remain fully mobilized to meet their needs.”
